Amanda Cox: Burlington, NC, United States; When I create, the adventure into the unknown fills me with joy. It’s about taking a part of me and sharing it with someone else, whether it’s through sharing in the experience, or in the outcome of that experience. Large-scale collaborative painting projects are my favorite; they allow me to do both. Painting releases my inhibitions, sets me free, free of my own thoughts and of seeking the approval of others. It’s about growth and trust, about letting go of what I know and embracing the mystery of what is to come. I consider myself a realistic abstract expressionist. I use bold brush strokes and quickly reach a point of spontaneity, painting over areas only to bring them back. I then reach a point where I don’t want to look at the painting. I come back with the same brush, but a renewed and greater passion for what I’m creating. When it means something to me, I know the painting is complete and should be shared with others. My work has been about perspective, evoking emotion, and appreciating and celebrating the parts that make the whole, the undefined areas that make the piece uniquely beautiful. I’m excited my work is now heading in a more tangibly abstract direction.
